Is it possible to ask credit card companies to disclose data needed for research?

Recently, I have had a ..not a million dollar.. but a 500 million dollar business idea that will do incredebly well and I am seriously thinking about putting it down on a paper and getting banks and institutions and small investors to get together and finance it. However, I need some data from credit card companies such as random spending habits on transportation, clothing, food and so on from a community of people. I intend to start small and then expand so I require data from credit card companies for the community I live in without any name or addresses or such.. just pure information so I could go ahead and make a realistic business plan and see how much I may require. I am wondering if if's possible to for Credit card companies to disclose of spending structure of people without disclosing thier identities for research, will I have to pay for it and where I should go?

  1. It is possible to access their statistical data but not personal data.
  2. It is very impossible. You can not go to credit card companies to disclose data which you need for. You can collect your data through statistical beaurau or somekind like that. But if you want to be more sure about your data have very high validity, meaning you have to make a questionaire. One point if you want to make it, you have to make ranging first like age, salary, gender, brand name. Since those variables are very helpful to you in order to make a market penetration. In your questionaire no need to put any identification person who answer it. The point is you will get what you need. Good luck.
  3. Some of the data you want may be available from the credit reporting agencies. They will provide you with income data, debt by household, number of credit cards owned and so on for an area. They do charge but I know they have sold this kind of data to individuals in the past. As to the credit card companies, they do gather the information you want or some of it at least but I have not heard of them selling it to private individuals. I would recommend you contact the largest companies by mail and offer to buy the info.
