How To Get Out Of Debt Questions
How can I get out of debt without changing my life? I have a full-time job, i live at home with mom and still can't get out of debt. I don't spend money foolishly, except for going out to the bars. So obviously I know you'll say to stop doing that. But I would like some input on how else I can slash my debt.
How do I get out of debt without paying it all at once? I want to start getting out of debt so we can afford some stuff for ourselves. I feel like I need to pay these debts off and then think about what we need in our home. I mean we have food and clothes and all but, just the things that needs replacements like furniture. How can I find out what state a Sprint "debt" originated from? I've been dealing with a debt collection agency trying to make me pay for a phone line I never had. I've gone through all kinds of calls, and for some reason, Sprint does have my personal info, and says I did create a home phone account. I have never owned a home phone in my life though. I had them send me copies of the bills, and there were never any calls made on this line, etc. But I'm getting away from my original question. I am trying to find out what state the debt originated in. This is because the statute of limitation on debt determines the validity of the debt. Different states have different SOL's so I need to find out what state Sprint debts originate in. I've looked all over the internet, but cannot find any answers. HELP! Thanks all! I live in Florida, and did at the time the "debt" originated. I believe the creditor can pick whichever state has the longer SOL. Luckily Florida is 4 years, and that passed a few days ago. kansas is only 3 years, so that'd be great.

Out of debt finally, but now how to budget and learn to save? It's been years and finally we are not carrying debt. I know the next step is to learn how to budget better and save for big things like a house. Right now, our credit is good, we use one credit card which is paid every month, but my husband and I seem to charge a lot. This is money I know we could use to save for a house. I'd say most of the time we buy stuff we really don't need. How do we learn how to cut the fat out of our lives and save for the things we really do want? How can I get my husband on the same page? Thanks.

How do i get out of this bank debt and still pay my bills on time? When My husband lost his job, we got into major debt with our bank. His check pays our babysitter and a few bills and when we were desperate we took out a payday loan too. Any advice?

How can I get out of my tax debt? I owe $80k+ in taxes and simply cannot afford to pay the IRS anything. I make very little at the moment and I owe the taxes on money I have never seen. I worked for a company who had Me put things in my name for awhile. They had me take out large sums of money for them as cash. I now know they used me as a shell company but the paper trail marks me as the debt holder. I was paid a very small sum of money to do this on top of my wages for the company. Being new to business and having no knowledge I thought it was a great deal. Now I am just screwed. Any suggestions? If I decided to just do the time how would I go about doing that and how long would I have to serve?
What is the easiest way to get out of debt? I am working on getting out of debt and am doing okay at it, but I can't do anything while doing it. There is nothing left to do fun things, and I can't even date if I don't have money to go out with. Is it really such a viscous circle?

What are some good stay out of debt books? My husband and I make pretty good money, although my salary will triple in about a year when I finish college but anyway, in the past we've paid of our credit cards, then got new ones and ran those right back up, then paid off again, cycle, cycle, cycle and I'm getting tired of "wasting" money this way! I wanted to read a book before my income tripled to help us stay OUT of debt and AWAY from credit cards, we just don't know how!
What happens if you get out of a debt management program? Im a 22 year old full time college student with a part time job. About three months ago I joined in charge debt solutions because I thought it would be easier for me to manage my credit card bills that way. However now after joining, I'm realizing that Im unable to keep up with the payments Im making to them. It's like after my other bills and this payment are taken out every month, I hardly have any money left and I think I've put myself in a bind. If I leave the program now will this mess up my credit, will it make it harder for me to join a debt management program in the future, will my creditors be resistant to work things out with me in the future because of this? I simply just can't afford to be in the program now.

How do I persuade a collection agency to buy off debt for less than original amount? Hi, I have a collection agency that bought off my hospital bill. Initially the bill cost me $1K. They did not receive a single payment from me. Now, a decade later debt increased to over $5K. Not planning to pay them any time soon unless one can negotiate to buy off debt for original charge. How does one influence agency to cave in on this agreement?
How do I find out how many people were jailed by lawyers for debt collection? People who can't pay a debt are sent a supoena to appear in court for what is called an aid and execution hearing. If they fail to appear, they are sent another supoena for contempt of court. If they fail to appear a warrant for there arrest is issued. I would like to find out how many people are arrested for this, and I would also like to know how many of those are on disability or welfare.

how to get a TOP SECRET clearance with Delinquent Debt? I have 3k worth of delinquent debt... and I'm trying to join the Navy. I was gonna pay off my entire debt with my sign on bonus, but I won't qualify for the job I want with any delinquent debt. The debt is on a credit card from Bank of America. What can I do to get rid of this debt? Are there any Navy Loopholes around this debt? Is there any other solution I might not know of?
How do I deal with THIS? help me get out of debt? I'm 24, one year left of college, working part time, I have no assets and I owe 17k to a credit card co. I've probably been called by more than one collection agency in the past year and a half since I stopped paying. So I have a couple of questions that would really help me in coming to the best solution. Should I just talk to the collection people negotiate for a lower settlement? Would I be able to pay monthly or would they require me to pay in full if they take a reasonable amount off the debt? Or should I call the credit card co directly and talk to them? What would I say to them, negotiate ? I can't afford more than $150 monthly, at least not until I finish school...but they wouldnt take that into their calculations, would they? I've heard stories that people continued to pay like $1 towards the debt...would I be able to do that? thanks a lot
When a person dies in debt is it wiped out? When a person dies with debt - like credit card debt, is the debt wiped out or does the responsibility fall on family members and if so how is it determined what family members are responsible for paying the debt. I'm not talking about funeral expenses, but personal debt.
How deep in debt is the United states in? We just discussed in class that each household would have to pay $549,000 to get out of debt. I know the number is very high but does anyone know the actual amount in debt we are?
How likely is it I will get a home loan? I am looking to purchase property is PA. My credit score is around 640 and the price of the property is 35,000. I will have around 10,000 to 12,000 to put as a down payment on the property and once I sell the property that I currently own my debt to income ratio will be only 10%. How likely is it that I will get approved for the loan since my credit isn't that good??
How "long" does debt settlement appear on credit history? Not even sure if I'm doing debt settlement. Just researching. Some say, your credit goes back up after you pay off the debt settlement amount in an average of 2-3 years. While on some articles I've read, it remains on your credit file for up to 10 years? What are the implications on your credit? How much do these agencies normally charge? Just afraid with scams.
Just got out of debt can i get a car loan? I just got out off debt and paid back over $35,000 in one years time. I live with my parents and make $44,000 a year is it possible for me to get financing for a $25,000 car? If so who should I go through or look at?
do those consolidation get out of debt faster programs work? i see they claim they can help you get out of debt faster and sometimes for less money than what you owe. and also are they really profit free ...you don't have to pay them money to do this service for you. and if they dont where do they get money to stay a float?
Is it normal for losing candidate to expect winner to bail them out of debt? The Clintons expect Obama to help them pay their 20 million dollar debt from campaigning. Is this normal? Did the republicans do that? Did McCain campaign to pay off Mitt Romney's debt? I think it odd, perhaps quite "bold" for the Clintons to expect Obama to help them out. Has this action happened before in previous elections?
Is it a good idea to use your 401k retirement to get out of debt? Like most, my 401k has really suffered this last year. Outside of that I lost my job so my employer is no longer contributing. Since I am losing money, is it a good idea to just take the money and pay off all my credit card debt I acquired while out of work for 6 months? I am 45 years old with an 11 year old son. I started working again but it's through a temp agency. Just sick of paying $350 per month on credit cards!
How to get a new car with no credit? I have no credit and i just finshed fixing my credit with paying of debt collectors. I want to buy a car but don't really know hot to start? Should I have a down payment or not? What are some good websites to look at for cars and etc?
What is my best option to get out of debt? I'm 26 and a second year law student. I currently have 27K in unsecured debt. I'm trying desperately to get out of debt and am curious about what the best option is. I am currently living at home to save money. Because I'm in law school, I only have a part time job where the hours fluctuate. My parents are not in a position to help me with the debt. I'm thinking of credit counseling? Debt settlement? Bankruptcy (absolute last option)?? Any suggestions?

How can I get $2000 to pay off student debt? I'm a senior in high school, and I've accrued a pretty hefty debt from all four years. I've also just been accepted into a college. Altogether I need to come up with $2000 ASAP, or else I won't be able to graduate or secure my position in college. The problem: I'm only 17, therefore I can't get a personal loan, and both of my parents just filed for bankruptcy. I have absolutely no financial support from them. Is there anyway I can get the money?
How to get out of debt?? Too many bills!? My husband and I have credit card debt to 2 cards, a vet bill, medical bills, and I have a personal loan I took out before we met. We have so much that we have had to let that go and focus on only the regular bills. I am not working now because I am pregnant, but will work somewhere after the baby is born. We really need a fresh financial start, to only focus on our family and our future, but continue to hear from companies about how much we owe. Can someone Please let us know what we can do to change our financial situation. ? Thanks.
Listening to Alistair Darling is he basically saying that to get out of Debt we have to get further into it ? ....Wow no wonder the country is up sh*t creak without a paddle with that type of thinking ? Spell check they are spending money they haven't got. Does this not need addressing, our children dont have much of a future with the debt's this lot are leaving them, it's crazy !!! Over the next 6 years Labour will be borrowing 606 BILLION POUNDS it's crazy we are bust now. What good is this apart from delaying things for future generations. It's so so irresponsible & wrong !!! The problem with this oh golly is Labour are a bad risk this has now been going on years. It never ends. If this trend was from an average man in the street running a small company they would be declared bankrupt you know it and i know it. We should face up to our responsibility's instead of burying our head in the sand with debt we have no hope of paying back !!

What happens to your "debt" when you walk away from your home? We may have to walk away (forclose) whatever on our home. I know it can't be as bad as it used to be, now that so many people have had to do it. Does anyone know what happens to what you owe on the house? Credit can mean much anyway - we have 700+ and couldn't lease a car!! Just wanted to see if anyone else has gone thru this and what happens to all that debt, etc. Thanks!
is it illegal to take out student loans and then not attend school? My sister has taken out two student loans, one with Sallie Mae and one with Bank of America. She enrolled in school, but then after she got the money she dropped out and spent the money (total of $30,000) to pay off debt and put a downpayment on a house. Is this illegal or fraud of any kind? I'm worried she may be getting herself into trouble?
How does medical debt hit your credit? I have about $30,000 in medical debt over the past 6 months. Ironically I started getting very sick within weeks of getting laid off in October 2008. I haven't been able to make the minimum monthly payments, but have been paying some at least, when I am able to. I have heard that medical debt affects your credit differently than credit card debt and such, how does that work?
How long does it take creditors to get a court order? I am waiting for creditors to get a court CCJ and they are all reluctant to do this as i have paid in the past, but am now on income support, they are refusing point blank wanting me to carry on paying from my sons disability benefits. Does anyone know how many missed payments before they at least give it to a debt collector. I have been to a debt company and am paying a token £1 a week to them all. Thanks
Help single parent get out of debt! ? I'm only 16 but I hate seeing my mom struggle to support me and my two brothers. They're older and in college. I still live at home and I looked through my mom's bills and after calculating it at all we are somewhere between $20,000 - $25,000 in debt. What can I do to help my mom pay off some of this debt? I don't know of any places that will hire at 16 so I can make money to send payments to the credit card companies. What are some ways I can help lower her debt? She tries hard to clear it too!

How do you know what type of bankruptcy to file.? Thinking of filing bankruptcy but not sure how to determine Chapt 7 vs Chapt 13. Most importantly we want to keep our home and cars. We have credit card debt that we cannot keep up with anymore. Talked to a credit agency and they suggested contacting a lawyer to explore this as an option. We are in Jefferson County Missouri. I need to find a lawyer to answer some questions. Any suggestions?
How do I get a debt collector to quit calling my mom? My mom has a debt collector calling her and harassing her. The problem is that she has no debt and never has. She is the kind of person that has never even paid a bill late. She doesn't even owe a bank anything. She has tried to explain to them that she doesn't owe anyone but they just keep calling. Is there any way to block them from even calling her number? She is already on the no call list
Should I help my boyfriend get out of debt? I have been with my boyfriend for a year and a half. We are in a serious relationship, leading to living together in the future. We're both in our early 50's, divorced, older teen kids. As part of my divorce settlement my marriage home needed to be sold and I received a nice sum from the sale. I'm planning on using a large chunk for a down payment on my next residence. I'm currently renting an apartment and want to buy a condo. I will still have a nice amount left after the down payment. My boyfriend is in debt and wants to pay off all his debts, credit cards, etc., which will total about $25,000. He didn't want to have to ask me if I could help him out, but he did and he wants to work out a repayment plan of putting a certain amount of his pay check into my account monthly. It will take about 5 years for him to repay me. He is willing to sign some sort of an agreement. I seriously doubt that he will not pay me back. What are people's opinions of me lending him this money? to answer some of your questions - neither of us wants to get married again. We had been in long term marriages before. I also don't want to give up my alimony. Living together is a commitment, we just feel that we don't need that piece of paper. A couple of you mentioned that he should see a financial counselor. How do you find one? And how would you know if that financial counselor is a good one with good advice? As far as me putting into an investment, probably for retirement - I do have a nice sum in a couple of retirement accounts. Actually this money is part of the money to be used to "hide" so that I will be able to contribute as little as possible for my daughter's college education. She does not want anything to do with me so I feel I should not be obligated to have to pay for her college.
Is it possible to go to a school like NYU or AMDA without going into a ton of debt? Obviously, I know that most people's worries are being accepted to those colleges, but is it possible for a middle class student to get into one? Is there any chance I could find scholarships to cover the entire cost? $30,000 a semester just seems unreal. Also, any college advice would be great. I'm a junior in high school right now, and I am needing to get on my applications probably over the summer, but get an idea of what I am doing even sooner. Thanks! Holly thanks for the link and I know they don't accept based on class, but I was worried about tuition, which seems extremely high..
Can i get enough financial aid to pay for all of my schooling? Im 20 years old, unmarried, and a mother to a one year old. I also nanny, so on paperwork, i have no job. If I have paid off all of my debt, is it possible to increase a credit score? I had many collection accounts. Today on a whim I paid everything off completely. I didn't do this before because I was a fool hearty 20 something. I am wondering if now I still have to wait the aloted time to clear or if there is a way I can facilitate this myself. These were collection accounts, not credit cards. They had to be paid in full in order to reflect that the Paid in Full letters. IE: 3 Medical collections, 1 TXU collections, one ATT collections

My Bf wants to go into more debt...how can i stop him? My Bf is okay with his money...but he was dumb when he was younger. He has a personal loan for about 10 000 with Westpac in NZ but hes here in Australia now. He hasnt paid that loan off for nearly nine months now and im worrying that they will go after his family. e has some debt here too, nothing big. About $5000 worth all up. He wants to take out another personal loan to pay that five thousand off in one go, and then only have the loan to pay, but he still wont be paying his big loan. I dont think its a good idea, but he reckons this is what he needs. Im in the finance industry and i know that its bad to go into more debt to pay old debt. its a very bad habit. Hes got an okay job, but even if he can get the loan, i really dont want him to. How can i stop him, ive tried making see reason, any ideas?
how does a debt collection agency make money? If the interest is frozen on a loan and a person defaults on payment, the debt gets sold to a collection agency.More times and not the interest is frozen and the balance bought is the outstanding amount ,so how do the collection agency make money.Surely by buying a bad debt and getting a small amount of money paid back each month ,doesnt make sense.
Is there anywhere to get a loan with horrible credit, but good income? I want to consolidate debts. ? I have made bad financial decisions in the past, but want to repair my credit and consolidate bills. I have a good work history (over 11 years) at a good paying job. $15,000 would get me totally out of debt and not hurt my budget to repay, but I can't find a loan company that will help. I would even agree to direct debit from my payroll to ensure repayment to the lending agent, but get turned down when I apply. I would appreciate any suggestions.
How to get out of credit card debt...? I have about $5000 in credit card debt (between 4 cards). How do I go about settling with each debtor for a % of the total amount owed on each card. Since it is tax time I just want to get rid of this debt and start fresh. Would settling bring up my credit score any? I need help? What would be the best way rid this debt!!! I recently lost my job to downsizing.
how can i move out of my flat that i share with my brother to get a place with my girlfriend? i own the flat with my brother but desperately want to move out. problem is the house won't sell for a profit so i will be out of money. ideally i would want my brothers girlfriend to take over my share of the flat but he doesn't want to right now. is there any way i can get out of the mortgage with minimum debt (i accept there will be some) and get a house with my girlfriend. is it also possible to add any debt onto the new mortgage?
How can I get back on top of my debt? I do not want to go bankrupt, my home is too important. I am barely floating from month to month. The interest alone each month is more then I bring home. My savings is running out. I already have a 2nd mortgage on my home. I will have to tap my small 401K soon. house is not worth what we owe. We are trying to finish the basement so that it may apraise high enough to consolidate everything.
Ways to get money and pay off a sudden debt like a car accident with bad credit, installment loans? My friend recently wrecked his car and has to pay a 500 deductible, on top of his rent for a 2 bed room apartment because his roomate left last month and left him with the tab, and also the car payment and other expenses. His credit is not good, its in the 550 area. Is installment loans really the only option? He has always been good with his payments and makes decent money...he isnt careless. Im just asking in a situation where alot of money is needed, are installment loans the only option for bad credit? Are there other places that give loans regardless of credit...things of that sort? That is my question. oh BTW, he pays everything on time as far as personal living expenses and car payments. He got discharged from the army because he blew his knee and has had multiple surgeries since then because it is very serious, and has medical expenses that he is still working on paying. He got his car before this. Please don't judge.
In Australia, how far can debt collectors go to get your money? Please note I am not being chased by a debt collector and I have no itention of getting into debt. I was just wondering if there was anyone who worked in the field that could give me some information - If a person owed money to a business and ignored all letters sent to them, ingored all phone calls etc. If they sent someone around to arrest the person but they never answer the door or have bitey dogs in the yard how would they arrest the person? Do they have a right to break down the door or restrain the dogs or something? Just curious Cheers :-)
How does a small business get its credit rated? I am interested in purchasing my friends resturant to help him get out of debt. He had it incorporated. So I will be owning my own corporation. How do banks and lenders view you as far as credit wise? Is it linked to my personal credit rating or do I get a separate rating for the business(corporation)? Please help before I make a big mistake. I appreciate any and all answers!
How long before a collections department closes the debt? I went to urgent care in 2006. I checked my credit report and I had an unpaid balance (I requested financial assistance) but I never heard back form them if I was responsible for the remainder. On my credit report was the balance ($117) and it said the account was closed. They were no longer trying to get money from me. (I was never contacted in the first place) How long does it typically take for someone to be put into collections before they write off the debt and don't bother you anymore?

how much debt will Vancouver be in after the 2010 olympics? Its certain we will be in debt, and that tax payers will be paying it off for the next while, but how long is a while? How big is the effect of the olympics really going to end up being? I heard around 75% of the profits go to VANOC and the IOC? and that Montreal JUST finished paying off their olympics. My friend did a huge research paper on it in university, but I don't really uinderstand how it works...

How low can I settle my credit card debt? I have some credit card debt (ranging from 1k-4k) that I want to settle on. I haven't paid a dime in about 2 years, so I should be able to get pretty low. The only problem is that I want to settle ASAP. I've heard people say you can settle for 30% of what you owe. I was thinking of a 40% settlement offer so make it quick and easy without having to negotiate back and forth. Any other info will help. Thanks!

Filing Bankruptcy to get out of lawsuit for a Corporation? I know a lawyer would know more about this, but a friend and I are arguing about this in Business class. Say you own a corporation and you get sued. You lose the case and to avoid paying, I say you can file bankruptcy which will clear your debt and dismiss the case. Then after bankruptcy is filed, the company can be restarted or reinstated. My friend says it probably won't do anything. What do you guys think?
how many people are in debt $20,000 or more, and how are you planing on getting out of debt? when i was declared disabled i thought the best thing for me was to go back to school. well needless to say the school seen me coming. i went two semesters and quit because of the large loans they had me take out. now i am $23,000 in debt, and no education to show for it. i am still on disability, but i am getting ready to get off it. i will be starting a part time job $6.50 an hour. this job is working for the city, and it has opportunity for growth and hopefully pay raises. what is the best way to start paying off this debt and still have money to live on?
How do I get out of debt? Any suggestions? (-$2000)? I could try and tell you that somehow I was suckered into giving money and blah blah blah but I admit that I ---ked up. Greed and credit led to a bad disaster, and what's even worse is that now I don't have a job, and I live in a town of 12,000 that has practically no jobs available. All I have is my high school diploma, but I'm still going to get higher marks for University, so any job I would do would have to be after school, and there's not alot of jobs that pay more than minimum wage after school with only your high school. What do I do? I'm so down. And if I get ANY answers that refer to "go to this website, I went here" blah blah blah I will personally refer you to Yahoo staff, and have you banned. Somebody help me!
How do I get debt collectors to stop calling my cell phone asking for another person? Ok so I got a new cell phone number about 2 weeks ago and lately I have been getting tons of calls from some company asking for a lady. I have told them a million times that they have the wrong number and to take me off their calling list but they simply hang up on me! Then one time I asked who was calling and the guy simply said "This is Mr.****** on behalf of a business matter" and when I tell them that I'm not the lady that they're looking for and to quit calling they simply hang up on me! The number that shows up is either UNKNOWN or weird numbers such as 555-555-5555. It's so annoying because they call about 10 times a day and many times early in the mornings! what can I do besides change my number????

How do i get out of this bank debt and still pay my bills when due? When My fiance lost his job, we got into major debt with our bank. They took away our overdraft priveleges, but still pay up to $300 in overdrafts. We bounced checks left and right and once we tried to stop our bills got really late. He fianlly has a job but we can't seem to catch up. My entire paycheck goes to bank charges every week. Is it a good idea to stop my direct deposit and pay my bank off gradually that way I still have cash to pay my bills? His check pays our babysitter and a few bills and when we were desperate we took out a payday loan too. Any tip?

Can I get out of paying a CC debt to a collections agency? A process server came to my door last year with papers to appear in court for a debt collection. I attended that one and making monthly payments. She advised under her breath to tell the court that have "psychiatric problems and do not remember any charges made", etc. She said to tell them I was seeing a psychiatrist and cannot remember using the card. Is this true? This was a process server!

If I put all of my student loan debt on a credit card, could I cancel this out by declaring bankruptcy? I currently owe $45,000 in student loans and I am having a hard time paying them off. The loans are private (sallie mae) and I am not elligible for consolidating them via federal loans since I am not a US citizen. I was not able to get a visa so I had to leave the US. I live in Europe now. I understand that declaring bankruptcy would not cancel out the student loans, but I have read that bankruptcy could cancel out credit card debt. I have a good credit score (790), so given some time, with an even higher credit score, I may be able to transfer my loans to a few credit cards. What are the laws regarding credit card debt and bankruptcy? What difference does it make that I am not a US citizen and do not live in the US?
